Los Altos is an affluent city in northwestern Santa Clara County. For those who may not know this: Santa Clara County is actually kind of huge, so even though it runs pretty far south, almost to Monterey Bay, it also runs far enough north to make up a small part of what most folks consider the San Francisco Bay Area, right near Palo Alto and Mountain View. Los Altos is an exemplary bedroom community. Most of its residents sleep in their gorgeous homes but spend the rest of their time elsewhere, whether for work, entertainment, shopping, etc.

Its neighbor to the west, Los Altos Hills, is an even more extreme version of this, with no commercially zoned land in the entire town. Residents of Los Altos enjoy easy access to the rest of the Bay Area, including Stanford University. The city is firmly in the region known as Silicon Valley, known as an epicenter of technological innovation and venture capitalism. Major arteries: the 280, 101, and 85 freeways.
